Post-doctoral Fellow Employment Opportunity

This position is a joint venture between the Institute of Health Policy, Management and Evaluation (IHPME; Dalla Lana School of Public Health) at the University of Toronto and the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health (CAMH).

As the largest mental health care provider in Canada, CAMH is frequently implementing innovations and novel service delivery interventions (e.g., Integrated Care Pathways). The post-doctoral fellow will help in the evaluation of these innovations and interventions, in particular cost-effectiveness analyses, with the goal of strengthening CAMH’s position and the Institute of Health Policy, Management and Evaluation’s role as health performance measurement experts in the development and dissemination of cost-effective mental health service delivery with the goal of maximizing quality and efficiency.

CAMH and IHPME are seeking a post-doctoral fellow to take on the above described challenge to help develop new economic evaluation models for interventions in the area of mental and addictive disorders. The job requires an excellent understanding of principles of economic evaluation, health services research and advanced econometrics. The results of this work will be important to inform mental health and addiction policy and resource planning, and improve delivery of care for patients with mental and addictive disorders in Ontario. In this position, you will prepare manuscripts for publications in peer reviewed journals and provide support in the submission of grant proposals to external funding agencies. In addition, the successful candidate will be expected to provide some teaching at IHPME. The post-doctoral fellow will be expected to demonstrate a commitment to conducting and fostering research and enthusiasm about participating in multidisciplinary research and training activities. In addition, at the end of the fellowship, it is expected that the post-doc will prepare their first grant submission. The position is a joint venture between IHPME and CAMH, with 33 Russell Street, being the primary workplace.


The successful candidate will possess a Ph.D. in Health Economics or a related field, obtained in the last 5 years, with an excellent understanding of economic evaluation principles, health service research and advanced econometrics and modeling. In addition, the successful candidate will possess experience in working with large datasets and administrative health care data, and experience and/or success in applying for funding to peer reviewed granting agencies. The successful candidate will demonstrate ability and experience in all stages of research, including expertise in research design and management of research projects, and quantitative methods, including the ability to conduct high level statistical analyses, such as multivariate approaches and structural equation modelling. The successful candidate will also have demonstrated ability in project management and organizational skills, including the design and management of research projects and report writing. The candidate should be self-directed and have experience working in a highly team-focused environment with multi-disciplinary team members from diverse backgrounds. The ability to collaborate effectively with colleagues, decision makers and the scientific community is required. Other requirements include: sound judgment, negotiation skills, strategic planning skills, and advanced facilitation skills; problem solving, networking and partnership building skills; commitment to high quality work and attention to detail; and excellent communication skills (written, oral and presentation). Bilingualism (French/English) and/or proficiency in a second language would be an asset.

The post-doctoral fellowship is for two years and carries a competitive stipend.
