The Emergence of RWE – Future Directions in Decision-making and Why it Matters to Pharmaceutical Policy

Abstract: This session will discuss the current landscape in Real World Evidence (RWE) in Canada and globally; and explore how RWE is impacting and changing drug approvals, reimbursement for Drugs and day-to-day clinical practice. We will summarize the recent national RWE guidance from CADTH and Health Canada. We will also introduce important areas of concern when critically-appraising and evaluating RWE studies and how they will affect drug approvals and Health-technology assessment.

Dr. Mina Tadrous is an assistant professor at Leslie Dan Faculty of Pharmacy where he and his research team focus on real-world evidence and pharmaceutical policy. He is also a scientist fellow at Women’s college hospital working with the institute for health system solutions and virtual care. He is co-director of the Ontario Drug Policy Research Network (ODPRN) and an adjunct scientist at ICES. Mina’s research interests lie in developing real-world evidence to inform provincial and national drug policy and the post-marketing surveillance of medications. He has a keen interest in leveraging big data to answer important health care questions. Specifically, he is driven to ensure the appropriate and safe use of medications and the sustainability of public drug programs.
