New Insights on Canada’s Pharmaceutical System: Cost-effectiveness, Generic Competition, and Drug Shortages

Étienne Gaudette
Patented Medicines Pricing Review Board; University of Toronto

Friday April 12, 2024, 10am-12pm, HSB Rm. 412 and Zoom

Abstract: Like other industrialized countries, the Canadian pharmaceutical system is currently facing important challenges, ranging from the sustainability of paying for high-priced drugs with sizable budget impact to that of the supply chain as drug shortages are becoming more frequent and impactful. This presentation will showcase ongoing work by the Patented Medicine Price Review Board’s NPDUIS Research Initiative relevant to these challenges. Three aspects of the Canadian pharmaceutical reality will be scrutinized: the cost-effectiveness of public drug spending, the competitivity of generic drug markets in comparison with peer countries, and the relationship between drug pricing and drug shortages.
