Healthcare Workforce: Issues and Potential Solutions

Abstract: The healthcare workforce is currently top of the agenda for Canada’s health ministers, for good reason. The opening line of a recent House of Commons committee report states: “Canada’s health workforce is in crisis.” Building on experience in the UK healthcare system, this presentation will set out some key analytical and financial issues involved in workforce planning and policy, with implications for Canada.

David is an economist and policy analyst, specializing in healthcare and public policy. He is a research fellow at TELUS and is studying at the Munk School at the University of Toronto. He was head of workforce in the strategic finance team at NHS England and previously worked for almost a decade in economics consulting, advising public and private sector clients. David is passionate about providing high-quality advice that supports efficient and equitable policymaking. His recent publications include commentary for the Globe & Mail, the C.D. Howe Institute and the Institute for Research on Public Policy.
